Could Sega Join the Online Gambling Market?
September 14th, 2009
Once a power player in the consoles and video games industry, SEGA could be now considering joining the online gambling market, according to a rumour spreading like wildfire through the community. The company is a developer and manufacturer of hardware and video games since 2001, but it used to be a very important force in the console war of the 90’s, releasing the Master System, the Mega Drive / Genesis, the Saturn and the Dreamcast.
Making a transition from traditional gaming software to online gambling software doesn’t sound like an illogical move at all, especially in times of crisis where companies are desperately in need of revenue, no matter where it comes from. Actually some people wonder how come this didn’t happen earlier, while other speculate about what SEGA will do: will they continue to develop games and license them to online casinos or will they launch their own online casino with SEGA themes?
The potential is huge either way, in particular if they use their worldwide famous mascot Sonic the Hedgehog. Can you imagine a Sonic Roulette, or how about Sonic & Knuckles Slots? SEGA should still worry about the storm that this could generate, as online gambling is a very controversial market after all. Only time will tell if this is only a rumour or a very real business possibility. True or not, it sure got us thinking.
